Position Summary

The VDC Manager is responsible for overseeing the engineering and design aspects of design-build and plan/spec projects, ensuring effective BIM (Building Information Modeling) coordination. This role requires in-depth knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, as well as strong leadership skills to manage a team of VDC Technicians, MEP Designers, and Drafters. The VDC Manager will play a critical role in facilitating collaboration among engineers, clients, and vendors to bring projects to life, ensuring that designs meet industry standards and project specifications. This position is integral to both operations and sales, handling engineering support needed throughout the sales process and ensuring that finalized plans are efficient for execution in the field. This role includes oversight of 3D modeling and renderings developed for sales presentations and customer interviews.

Essential Job Functions

  • Oversee the output of the VDC team, including VDC Technicians, MEP Designers, and Drafters, ensuring all work aligns with project goals and standards.
  • Lead the engineering portion of design-build projects (working very close with the HMI sales engineer on project requirement, standards, codes and customer needs).
  • Provide BIM coordination for both design-build and plan/spec projects.
  • Implement and uphold BIM standards across all projects, keeping the team updated on emerging trends and advancements.
  • Collaborate closely with the sales team to provide engineering and design support during the sales process, including the preparation of accurate drawings and models. Sales meeting and weekly reviews with all sales personnel will be needed to maintain close relationships with the sales department.
  • Oversee the development of 3D modeling and renderings used in sales presentations and interviews.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers to produce comprehensive drawings.
  • Manage, manipulate, and coordinate models from various stakeholders including customers and consultants.
  • Identify and resolve design conflicts across multiple trades.
  • Oversee the development of system installation drawings based on field measurements, ensuring they are efficient, optimized for fabrication and installation, and satisfy the needs of the sales engineer, project manager, and foremen.
  • Review and coordinate equipment selections with vendors, guided by engineering considerations, to optimize designs for ease of installation.
  • Facilitate communication among all project stakeholders, including engineers, architects, clients, vendors, in-house sales teams, project managers, fabrication leads, and field technicians, ensuring alignment, understanding, and proactive resolution of design conflicts.
  • Participate in project design meetings to provide valuable insights and guide the team in achieving project objectives.
  • Conduct on-site surveys to understand existing conditions and ensure accurate design execution utilizing scanning and total station equipment.
  • Engage in fieldwork as needed to support project execution.
  • Maintain organized project documentation and lead revision control to ensure all changes are captured and communicated.
  • Manage and coordinate third-party engineering and design partners to meet project deadlines and help control costs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong technical aptitude and proficiency with computer systems and common software.
  • Extensive experience with BIM tools such as Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, with strong technical proficiency across these software platforms.
  • Solid understanding of MEP systems, as well as industry codes and standards.
  • Willingness to engage in several BIM-related fields.
  • Leadership and team management skills with the ability to guide teams of engineers and drafters.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on clear communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a creative mindset for innovation in design solutions.
  • Excellent organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Attributes such as enthusiasm, initiative, creativity, professionalism, and teamwork are essential.
  • Physical capability to engage in fieldwork and navigate construction environments safely..
