Position Summary
The Plumbing Sales Engineer is responsible for designing and selling new and replacement plumbing systems in accordance with customer and building specifications. This role serves as the primary technical sales lead for design-build plumbing opportunities, integrating engineering expertise with customer relationship management to drive profitable project awards. The position is also involved in system design for installation by our field construction teams and project management departments.

- Build and maintain strong customer relationships to support and manage a pipeline of business opportunities.
- Partner with customers early in the project lifecycle to define performance goals, budget parameters, constructability considerations, and system preferences.
- Evaluate customer plumbing systems and provide recommendations for upgrades or enhancements to meet project and client objectives.
- Stay informed on local market trends, company initiatives, and competitive activity.
- Analyze sales performance, market conditions, and customer feedback to refine design-build strategies and support sustainable plumbing sales growth.
- Develop and implement strategies to expand HMI’s share of the plumbing sales market.
- Design plumbing systems based on customer input while ensuring compliance with applicable building codes and ordinances.
- Develop conceptual and preliminary plumbing system designs to support accurate budgeting, scheduling, and value-driven decision-making during the sales phase.
- Lead value engineering efforts to improve system efficiency, lifecycle cost, constructability, and code compliance while maintaining customer objectives.
- Coordinate with vendors, manufacturers, and suppliers to evaluate products, pricing, availability, and system options for proposed designs.
- Review contract documents and customer requirements to ensure alignment of scope prior to project execution.
- Identify design, schedule, and cost risks and proactively develop mitigation strategies.
- Continuously identify and implement process improvements to enhance design-build efficiency, accuracy, and customer experience.
- Obtain project estimates from the estimating team and approve pricing while ensuring targeted profit margins are maintained.
- Support resolution of change orders by evaluating scope changes, pricing impacts, and technical feasibility.
- Prepare and present proposal letters including project scope, assumptions, descriptions, and pricing, and follow up to secure customer approval.
- Participate in preconstruction, turnover, and kickoff meetings to ensure a smooth transition from sales to execution with clear scope and design intent.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with customers and internal teams to convey design intent and resolve issues during construction.
- Provide technical guidance and solutions to field teams and foremen to support issue resolution, collaboration, and successful project execution while supporting sales outcomes.
- Act as a technical mentor to junior designers, sales staff, and field personnel to strengthen design-build capabilities across the organization.
- Promote and follow all required safety protocols as defined by customers and/or HMI policies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Hold a valid design stamp (or ability to obtain one) or possess a Master Plumber license in the State of Wisconsin. Equivalent experience will be considered.
- 5+ years of experience in the commercial/industrial plumbing industry.
- Strong knowledge of plumbing systems, including design, installation, and operational principles.
- Working knowledge of applicable plumbing codes, standards, and regulations, including state and local amendments, and ability to apply them in design-build work.
- Ability to interpret architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, and contract documents to develop accurate plumbing concepts and proposals.
- Ability to develop conceptual budgets, perform high-level cost analysis, and evaluate financial impacts of design decisions during the sales process.
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and organizational skills with attention to detail.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office tools including Outlook, Word, and Excel, within a Windows-based environment.
- Ability to lead and support others in troubleshooting and resolving plumbing system issues for customers and field teams.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across office, field, and customer teams.
- Demonstrates professionalism, initiative, creativity, leadership, teamwork, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
- Physical ability to access job sites, including climbing, crawling, walking, kneeling, and other movements required to inspect systems, with or without reasonable accommodation.
