Position Summary
Under the direction of the production manager, the sheet metal journeyman is responsible for fabricating, assembling, installing, and repairing sheet metal equipment, products, and structures. As a skilled tradesman, a journeyman demonstrates excellence in workmanship, training, skill, and integrity.
Essential Job Functions
To perform this position successfully, the following responsibilities must be performed satisfactorily. - Select gauge and type of sheet metal according to the products being fabricated and knowledge of metals.
- Assign work, and instruct and train apprentices, pre-apprentices, and other craft workers.
- Determine project requirements, including scope, assembly sequences, and required methods and materials, by interpreting specifications, blueprints, job orders, and verbal or written instructions.
- Establish and adjust work sequences to meet construction schedules.
- Fabricate or alter parts at construction sites using tools such as shears, hammers, punches, drills, welders, and related items.
- Install assemblies such as flashing, tubes, HVAC ducts, supportive framework, and related items.
- Set up and operate sheet metal fabricating machines, including but not limited to shears, brakes, flanges, crimpers, punches, and drills, to cut, trim, form, shape, and otherwise prepare parts and sections for assembly.
- Use machine and hand tools to cut and form pieces to required dimensions. Solder, roll, or rivet seams. Reinforce parts as needed.
- Perform work from ladders, mechanical lifts, and confined spaces using all required safety measures.
- Follow all safety rules and regulations without exception.
- Use precision and control in work where damage could be considerable.
- Select the gauge and type of sheet metal required according to job and product specifications.
- Move materials and supplies using proper ergonomics.
- Maintain a clean and organized job site.
- Work the assigned schedule, which may fluctuate based on customer needs and may include some evenings, nights, and weekends, with or without overtime.
- Be willing to work out-of-town as needed (travel expenses included per contract).
- Maintain time records for self and team.
- Perform any special assignments, additional projects, or other job-related duties as may be necessary to carry out the responsibilities of this position.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must hold a valid driver’s license and be approved by HMI’s insurance company to drive company vehicles.
- Successful completion of a 5-year apprenticeship or an approved equivalency based on work experience.
- Skilled in sheet metal fabrication, installation, and repair of sheet metal and related equipment.
- Skilled in MIG, TIG, and Arc welding is preferred but not required.
- Excellent mechanical aptitude, work ethic, and attendance record.
- Ability to safely and efficiently operate drills and other tools of the trade.
- Hoisting and rigging skills required.
- Knowledge of testing and balancing.
- Must be able to stay on task, be self-motivated, and provide good leadership to crews.
- Physical ability to climb, crawl, lift heavy items, and work in a variety of environments, including indoor/outdoor, hot/cold weather, confined spaces, and heights (any necessary safety training will be provided prior to entering these environments).
