Accountant Requirements & Responsibilities

Position Summary

As an Accountant, you will support a variety of cost accounting and financial functions, including but not limited to payroll processing, federal and state payroll tax preparation, bank reconciliations, daywork and job billings, certified payroll reporting, and other essential accounting activities. This role requires strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.

Essential Job Functions

To perform this position successfully, the following responsibilities must be performed satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential job functions. The following responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Process Accounts Payable transactions.
  • Prepare and submit Accounts Receivable invoices.
  • Post daily cash receipts.
  • Perform monthly bank statement reconciliations.
  • Prepare and submit state and federal payroll tax reports.
  • Prepare daywork billings and job billings as needed.
  • Determine sales and use tax requirements for jobs and work orders.
  • Receive, review, and maintain sales tax exemption certificates.
  • Assist with weekly timecard entry and review.
  • Process employee reimbursements and subsistence checks.
  • Set up new vendors and customers in the accounting system and manage related information requests.
  • Reconcile bank accounts and general ledger activity, including ACH receipts and payments.
  • Maintain accurate general accounting files and records.
  • Generate payroll-related reports, including safety and certified payroll reports.
  • Prepare and submit certified payroll reporting.
  • Provide backup support to other Accounting Department team members as needed.
  • Perform special assignments, additional projects, and other job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, or an Associate’s degree with 2–4 years of relevant accounting experience.
  • Prior experience processing payroll in a union environment strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience with cost accounting strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with computers, email, spreadsheets, and internet-based resources.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel (formulas, pivot tables, VLOOKUPs).
  • Strong understanding of accounting and bookkeeping principles and practices.
  • Excellent data entry skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated reliability, including strong attendance and punctuality, with the ability to work the required schedule.
